The store’s predecessor opened its doors in 1974 as part of the famous Folkart chain. This system of more than 80 units was established by the communist state in 1963 with the aim of providing jobs for rural artisans and keeping traditional folk crafts alive. After the change of regime in 1989, the chain was privatized – but the new owners were not interested in preserving cultural values, but in real estate. Most of the stores closed, and with them many craft traditions disappeared.
The shop on Régiposta Street, however, chose a different path. It is the only shop that has survived to be privatized by professionals, preserving its folk art character. It has been operating as a family business since 2001, with an unchanged spirit.
The colorful world of Hungarian folk art
The Folkart Handicraft House is still the most comprehensive folk art shop in the country. The shelves are lined with glazed, unglazed and black ceramics, traditional handicrafts, Halas lace, woven fabrics, costumes, embroidered eggs, wood and bone carvings, horsehide water bottles, and even ornaments depicting entire regions. The specialty of the shop is that it represents all historical regions of the Carpathian Basin – including the traditions of the pre-Trianon areas. The products are all juried, certified works, the work of true masters.
Knowledge and experience – personal storytelling
The true value of the shop is not only the objects, but also the expert salespeople working there. The staff have in-depth knowledge of the roots of Hungarian folk culture and are happy to tell customers about the traditions, regions, and ethnic groups associated with each object. Whether it is a matyó embroidery, Kalotaszeg lace, or Székely wood carving – in the shop you can not only shop, but also learn. This makes the visit a true cultural experience.
A bridge between past and present
Folkart Handicraft House is not just a shop – it is a living tradition center, where past and present meet. The people who work here feel it is their calling to pass on the values of our craft culture. Our history lives on not only in museums, but also in everyday objects – this message is conveyed by each product and personal story told by the sellers.
This store is more than a shopping opportunity: it is a gateway to the heart of Hungarian culture.
